Comforted to Comfort

…receiving and giving encouragement.

There are times when you feel so immersed in your life and problems that you feel no one else understands you. Maybe they do, and you are the overwhelmed one, forgetting that these people just might have something they’re dealing with, too.

Hello! Thank you for reading today’s Hope Alive newsletter. I trust you have been good and I sure miss writing to y’all. Today, I will be talking about how we have been called to be encouragers.

Christ told us something before He left the earth. In two words:

“Expect tribulations.”

John 16:33 NKJV

These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.

As long as you are still breathing and occupying space on earth as a human being, you’re not free from trials.

So if you’re not free from these things, what makes you think someone else next to you has everything perfectly fine or smooth?

The only thing that might be different is the timing. I used “might” because the time you are faced with your trials may be different from that of your friends, yet it could be the same time.

God has called each of us to be ambassadors for Christ.

This means that in all areas, we are to represent and do the works that Christ would normally do. We are meant to be extensions of His grace and glory. One of the many roles is being called to be encouragers.

II Corinthians 1:3-4 NKJV

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

These verses tell us that we are to give out comfort or encouragement as we also need to receive it. It goes both ways.

  • Firstly, by abiding in God and surrounding ourselves with encouragers, we are able to safely get through the trials.

  • Secondly, as I mentioned earlier, we have been called to encourage others. This implies that we have to be strong, with the mentality that we have a role to play in someone’s life: the role of encouragement. This comes with the additional responsibility of asking God who He is sending us to comfort at each moment.

So it’s perfectly fine to seek comfort and encouragement from God and those He has placed in our lives. But when we receive it, we need to be on the lookout for someone else to whom we can give back that comfort and encouragement.

I pray that God surrounds us with those who will comfort us in our weak moments. May He open our eyes to see someone who needs encouragement and help us remain humble to heed His instructions. Amen.

During the Christmas break, it seemed like everyone—well, maybe not everyone—in the church was talking about it. While I traveled, the church I attended had a pastor who prayed about Christ's coming back soon. When I returned to my normal place of residence, that was one of the first things my pastor mentioned a couple of times. About a week later, I ca…
