Without the Details

Taking a leap ...

Some days ago, or maybe over the past week, I found myself carrying more frustration than I wanted to admit. Surprisingly, it wasn’t because my research wasn’t progressing. It was because of something I had absolutely no control over: the weather.

Every decision about collecting my field data depended on it.

More than once, I had to email the people I was collaborating with to cancel scheduled fieldwork because the forecast wasn’t favorable. Eventually, I settled on a date that looked promising. Finally, I thought. This should work.

Then the forecast changed. Again.

I remember staring at the weather updates, trying to decide whether to continue with the original plan, hoping a miracle would happen, or postpone to the next day, which suddenly looked better, even though the forecast had initially shown possible thunderstorms. The uncertainty was exhausting. I just wanted the sun to stand still, or someone to tell me, “This is the right day.”

I spoke with my advisor about it, and his response was simple: Let’s go ahead. The worst that can happen is that we get to the field and have to come back.

So, we went.

For a while, everything looked perfect. Then the rain came… lol. A few moments later, the sky cleared again. Data collection: successful. ✅

Looking back at those times of frustration, I remember repeatedly saying, “I don’t like how unpredictable this weather is.” I even convinced myself that working in a controlled environment would be much easier because that would be one less uncertainty to deal with.

Hi everyone, and welcome to another episode of the Hope Alive Newsletter. I trust you’ve been doing well! As you read, I pray that God will reveal areas of your life where He is inviting you to trust Him more deeply.

If we’re honest, most of us want the details before we move. We want certainty. We want guarantees. We want to know what tomorrow looks like before we take today’s step. We want to know that our plans will work, that our efforts will succeed, and that nothing unexpected will interrupt what we’ve carefully prepared.

But life rarely works that way.

The reality is that life is full of uncertainties, and following Christ does not exempt us from them.

In fact, many of the steps God asks us to take require faith precisely because we don’t have every detail. Talk about constantly taking a leap.

‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭10‬:‭38‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Now the just shall live by faith; But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him.

If we knew exactly what to do, when to do it, how everything would unfold, and how every obstacle would be resolved, there would be little need for faith. Most of our worries would disappear if we had complete knowledge and control.

But we don’t. And perhaps that is intentional.

The details we don’t have often become the very reason we worry, overthink, and become frustrated. Yet those missing details also remind us of something beautiful: we need God. Our uncertainty exposes the need for dependence.

Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6:34 KJV

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

God never promised us tomorrow’s details today. Instead, He promises today’s grace for today’s assignment.

Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Notice that God doesn’t tell us to understand everything first. He tells us to trust Him first. Faith is not having every answer before taking the next step. Faith is obeying the One who already knows every answer.

Sometimes, like my experience in the field, the rain may come. Plans may seem interrupted. Circumstances may change without warning. But the same God who knew the weather also knew the outcome. What looked like another failed attempt became a successful day because God had already gone ahead of us.

How often do we postpone obedience because we are waiting for perfect conditions?

What if God is simply saying, “Go. I’ll take care of what you cannot see.” Walk by faith, not because you have all the details, but because you know the One who does.

2 Corinthians 5:7 KJV

For we walk by faith, not by sight.

May we learn to trust God even when the forecast changes, the path seems uncertain, and the details are incomplete.

May our hope remain alive, not in knowing everything, but in knowing the One who knows everything.
